This Day in Sports History: The A's Win The Ultimate Battle of the Bay

On October 28, 1989, 35 years ago today, the Oakland A's won their last world championship in Oakland. Rickey Henderson got things going with a homerun off of San Francisco's Don Robinson at the top of the order in the first inning. The route only escalated in the second inning when Mike Moore drove in two and Rickey Henderson drove in Moore to give the A's a commanding 4-0 lead over the cross-town rival Giants.

While the Giants would go on to make things interesting by scoring six runs between the sixth and seventh innings, they were already too far behind and ultimately fell 9-6. Oakland native pitcher Dave Stewart won the World Series MVP award with a 2-0 record and a 1.69 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16 innings of work.

It was a fitting tribute to a man who had done so much for his community in the wake of the devastating earthquake that paused the Fall Classic for an unprecedented 10 days. Before the A's departed for Arizona to prepare for the World Series to resume, Stewart spent much of his time providing food and water for the first responders of his devastated community. It was the perfect picture of all that the 1989 Fall Classic was. It was so much more than the game.
